Happiness Through Giving

There are a lot of ways to make a greater sense of happiness in your life, but one of the barest and most powerful is by giving to others. Why does giving happiness to others make you feel more pleased?

  • You minimize your own difficulties: Focusing on what you can offer to help others can put your own struggles into perspective. Naturally, we focus on our own problems, believing that they are much worse than they truly are. That being said, learning to come to terms with somebody who is experiencing even greater difficulties can change your perspective.
  • You focus more on abundance: When you develop a sense of happiness by helping others, your mindset changes from one of scarcity to abundance  even if you are not giving money. Focusing on your troubles and difficulties magnifies awareness of lack, but as soon as you concern yourself with the needs of others, you are essentially asserting that you are confident that you cannot be deprived of anything.
  • Blessing others just feels really good: The more you do for other people, the more salutary you’ll feel about yourself. As a way to further augment that good feeling, give without expecting anything in return. You’ll be bestowing a blessing without ever developing a reciprocal expectation; and instead, acknowledge that giving is its own reward—a reward that makes this a little easier!

It may feel like you would not have anything available to give to other people in the present, particularly if you are experiencing serious monetary problems or are experiencing hardships as a result of these troubles. Nonetheless, no matter your present circumstances, it is important to offer in some areas, as interpersonal connections can contribute to your wellbeing.

Make use of your expertise and experience in the service of a good cause by volunteering with an organization for a few hours every week. Are you good at making people smile and feel happy? Provide your aid to a long-term or grant-funded service in which you might serve. A few ways exist to help other individuals, and a few do not involve finances.
